Sustainable Biowaste Treatment Using The Black Soldier Fly Larvae
Our Team
Teguh Rahayu
Founder & Technical Consultant
Teguh was a consultant of Project FORWARD by Eawag, where she worked to manage BSF nursery, to train assigned staff from public and/or private parties in the operation of BSF nursery and waste conversion system, and to produce training resources from the “curriculum” which is developed and documented based on the training. Since 2017, she has also trained local and foreign clients who were interested in implementing BSF technology. Teguh has experience in insect mass rearing during her college study, especially for Asian Corn Borer (ACB, Ostrinia furnacalis), thus becoming a valuable asset when she had a responsibility to manage BSF nursery during her previous work. At HermetiaTech, she is in charge of training and consulting assigned staff from the clients (public and/or private parties) in the operation of a waste conversion system aiming at becoming self-sustained on operational basis; taking a leading role in performing the trials (design experiment, write the report, and draft trial debriefs) to optimize the operation of waste conversion system; and assisting the training, consulting, and performing trials in the nursery system. Teguh holds a Bachelor of Science Degree from the Department of Plant Protection, Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Gadjah Mada focused on Entomology.
Tina Kusumawardhani
Founder & Technical Consultant
Tina is a consultant specialized in managing biowaste using the Black Soldier Fly (BSF) technology. She worked as a consultant of Project FORWARD by Eawag, an R&D project funded by the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO), joining the team to build the BSF pilot facility in Sidoarjo, Indonesia. She worked to manage the BSF nursery and waste conversion units to keep the cycle running, was involved in the experiments to increase the performance of both units, also train assigned staff from public and private partners in the operation of BSF nursery and waste conversion systems. Since 2017 she started to train local and foreign clients who were interested in implementing the technology and provide training resources from the ‘curriculum’ developed and documented during the training. At Hermetia Tech, she is in charge of training and consulting assigned staff from the clients (public and/or private parties) in the operation of BSF Nursery system aiming at becoming self-sustained on operational basis; taking a leading role in performing the trials (design experiment, write report, and trial debriefs) to optimize the operation of BSF Nursery system; and assisting the training, consulting, and performing trials in the waste conversion system. About HermetiaTech
HermetiaTech is formed by a team from Project FORWARD (From Organic Waste to Recycling for Development)-an R&D project implemented by Eawag, under a framework agreement with the Indonesian Ministry of Public Works & Housing/Kementerian PUPR, and funded by the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs/SECO.
Specialized in the training and consulting services for rearing BSF and organic waste conversion operation, by collaborating with Eawag (Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology in Switzerland). Years experienced in implementing BSF technology and improving the existing system creatively, as well as providing training to local and foreign clients since 2017.

Why is BSF used for organic waste conversion?
Increasing demand for insect-based protein and fat in the market as animal feed, makes BSF technology the best option.
The use of insect larvae for organic waste conversion has obtained attention in recent years, for example using Black Soldier Fly (BSF).
From health benefits, BSF is not a pest and does not transmit diseases, because the fly has a short lifespan and does not feed like other flies. Moreover, according to recent studies, BSF can reduce the pathogen population in waste sources. On the other hand, BSF is resilient to live in any environmental condition. Other benefits are its rearing and conversion systems that can be operated in low-tech equipment. Nevertheless, the special benefit of BSF is its ability to reduce organic waste in a short time and resulting in a high bioconversion rate (BCR). Those attributes make BSF ideal to be used as a nutrient recycler of organic waste.
Increasing demand for insect-based protein and fat in the market as animal feed, makes BSF technology the best option.
Cost-Effective Waste Reduction Up to 80%
Reducing chain process and space
required for landfill facility
Reliable & Simple Technology
The process itself already well streamlined and there is no need for a high-end technology to maintain the facility
Sustainable BSF Treatment Facility
- The larva is a high-quality alternative protein source for animal feed (farmed and pet animals).
- Residue (frass) is quite similar to soil-like substance. Hence, after further treatment to be mature compost, it can be used as a fertilizer or soil amendment.
Our Services
Online Consultancy
Suitable for you who are willing to gain a basic understanding of biowaste conversion using BSF larvae and to solve any issues arising from your BSF facility, efficiently and effectively.
BSF Site Development
We provide a complete package of consultation to build your BSF site from the start, according to your requirements/project/timeline. Generally, we divide the consultancy into three phases:
Phase 1
Online Consultancy for site preparation: in-depth knowledge of the project, the design of facility and materials required. This phase will ensure that process flow and the equipment required are ready before the second phase starts.
Phase 2
On-site Consultancy is to accommodate the training section and monitoring operation. During the training, the work schedules, SOPs and feeding/harvesting schedules will be used as a guiding tool to train the staff. Using log sheets, the productivity of the operation could be measured and analyzed.
Phase 3
The monitoring and evaluation visit will happen after accumulating sufficient data. We could assist in improving/adjusting various processes by directly being involved to run the experiments to ensure the output target is reached.

Testimony from Clients
Teguh was one of our instructors in 2018. Later on in 2019, she worked with us a consultant helping us to research and improve our black soldier fly rearing process. She was instrumental in helping us set up a pilot facility to innovate on our existing processes.
I was particularly impressed by Teguh's adaptability and resilience. Being able to deliver quality work despite changing project priorities, demanding timelines, and the different working conditions in a foreign country spoke volumes.
Teguh would be an asset to your BSF project.
Should i say a BSF dictionary ?!
I got a chance to work with Tina and i learnt so much. Her thorough knowledge of the BSF rearing process amazed me. She is a critical thinker and is able to find solutions for the challenges usually encountered in the various stages of BSF rearing.
